ANCIENT FUTURE

ROLE
Realtime VFX, Modelling & Environment Art
DESCRIPTION
A collaboration between myself and Ashley De Brincat.
A modular environment pack with the scene of an ancient temple. This design mixes sci-fi with fantasy, where things are not as they appear, skeletons and spiders are robots, torches and flames are holograms, and magical effects are replaced with technology.

BREAKDOWN
HOLOGRAPHIC TORCH FX
The torch flame is designed to look holographic from close up but natural from a distance. The frame colour and size can be changed to give a magical flame effect. the holder can be changed between wooden and brass.
HOLOGRAPHIC CANDLES
There are several types of holographic candles, each of which can change flame size and colour, these are placed through the temple.
SMALL FIREPIT
Small firepits are placed through the level, these holographic pits may also change in colour and size.
LARGE FIREPIT
The large firepit is used as a focal point to illuminate an area, in the temple this is positioned up high above a pillar with walkways to indicate how grand it is. Like all flames in this environment, these are holograms.
DIMENSIONAL PORTAL
The dimensional portal was designed to look ancient, but is actually run by future technology. This incorporates wires leading to the portal from a holographic computer system while the stone pilar to the side pulsates like a power source.
SELECTION OF EFFECTS & MODELS
GATEKEEPER STATUE
The giant gatekeeper statue was sculped in ZBrush and holds the winch for the chains anchored to the grounds which stop the giant ancient demon door from opening.

SKELEBOT
Around the temple, there are skeletons. To the onlooker these seem like normal skeletal remains until you get closer. As you approach them your eyes seem to be playing tricks on you, as the bone starts to look a lot like metal.

PORTAL EFFECT
The portal effect is a Niagara effect, which is a combination of three effects which create the pulsating and fading effects of the portal.
